Mistral AI

Mistral AI is a French company building open-weight frontier language models, plus Vibe, its consumer chat app and coding agent.

What is Mistral AI?

Mistral AI is a Paris-based AI lab that builds open-weight large language models you can download and run yourself, alongside a hosted consumer app called Vibe (renamed from Le Chat in May 2026) and a developer platform called Studio. Where most frontier labs only let you access their models through a paid API, Mistral releases many of its models under the Apache 2.0 licence, meaning you can inspect, fine-tune, and self-host them on your own infrastructure at no cost. For developers and enterprises who care about data residency, customization, or simply not being locked into one vendor’s API, Mistral is one of the few labs building genuinely open, production-grade alternatives to closed models like GPT and Claude.

How Mistral works

Mistral ships two complementary things: open-weight models anyone can run, and hosted products built on top of them.

Open-weight models: Mistral Large 3, Small 4, and Medium 3.5 are released with their weights publicly downloadable, so a team can run them on their own GPUs instead of calling an external API for every request.

Mixture of experts: Several Mistral models use a mixture-of-experts architecture, where only a fraction of the model’s total parameters activate for any given request, keeping inference fast and cheaper to run than a dense model of the same size.

Long context: The flagship models support context windows up to 256,000 tokens, letting them read long documents, codebases, or conversation histories in a single pass.

Vibe: The consumer-facing chat app, renamed from Le Chat, adds web search, image generation, voice interaction, and a code interpreter on top of the underlying models.

Vibe for Code: A separate agentic coding assistant that runs in the terminal, inside an IDE, or in the background, handling tasks like refactors and test generation with awareness of your project’s architecture.

Studio: A platform for building, evaluating, and deploying custom agents, with observability and guardrails for teams running Mistral models in production.

What you can build with Mistral

Self-hosted enterprise assistant: Deploy an open-weight Mistral model inside your own VPC so employee data never leaves your infrastructure, useful for finance and legal teams with strict compliance requirements.

Document intelligence pipeline: Use Mistral’s long context window to summarise contracts, extract structured data from PDFs, and answer questions across a large set of internal documents at once.

Custom fine-tuned model: Take an open-weight base model and fine-tune it on your own proprietary data to build a model that speaks your industry’s language without sending that data to a third party.

Coding automation: Use Vibe for Code to generate tests, translate legacy code to a modern framework, or run automated code review as part of a CI/CD pipeline.

Multilingual customer support: Combine Mistral’s language coverage with a support workflow that drafts and triages tickets in multiple European languages from a single deployment.

FAQ

Is Mistral free to use? +

Yes, in two ways. The open-weight models are free to download and self-host under an Apache 2.0 licence, so you never pay Mistral directly. Vibe, the consumer chat app, also has a free tier capped at roughly 25 messages a day, with a Pro plan at $14.99 a month for higher limits and deeper research features.

What happened to Le Chat? +

Le Chat was renamed Vibe at the end of May 2026. All existing conversations, settings, and subscriptions carried over automatically, so nothing was lost in the switch. The renamed product also expanded beyond chat to include Vibe for Code, an agentic coding assistant built on the same underlying Mistral models.

What makes Mistral different from ChatGPT or Claude? +

Mistral is the only major lab that ships genuinely open-weight frontier models alongside its hosted products, so you can self-host a model on your own infrastructure instead of calling someone else's API. It is also based in the EU, which matters to organisations with strict data residency or GDPR requirements.
