Runway

An AI video generator that turns text, images, and footage into consistent, production-ready clips for ads, film, and social content.

What is Runway?

Runway is an AI video generation platform that turns text prompts, still images, or existing footage into finished video clips. Its Gen-4.5 model keeps characters, locations, and objects consistent across multiple shots, something earlier video models struggled with, which makes it usable for real advertising and narrative work rather than one-off novelty clips. Runway also ships Aleph, a tool for editing existing video by changing a single keyframe: swap an object, relight a scene, or shift the camera angle without reshooting. A developer API with Python and Node SDKs lets you build video generation directly into your own product. For AI developers building media tools, Runway is one of the few platforms production-ready enough to ship on.

How Runway works

Runway generates video using a diffusion model, a type of AI model that starts from random noise and gradually refines it into a coherent image or sequence of frames, guided by your prompt. The platform accepts three kinds of input, and each unlocks a different workflow.

Text-to-video: You describe a scene in natural language and Runway generates a video clip that matches the description, including camera movement and lighting cues if you specify them.

Image-to-video: You upload a still image and Runway animates it, predicting how the elements in the frame would plausibly move and generating motion around that starting point.

Video-to-video (Aleph): You start with existing footage and change one keyframe, a single representative frame from the clip, to relight the scene, swap an object, change the visual style, or shift the camera angle. Runway propagates that edit across every frame of the video.

Consistency across shots: Gen-4.5’s core technical advance is holding a character, location, or object stable across multiple separate generations, so you can produce several shots of the same subject in different settings without it drifting in appearance between clips.

Credits and access: Every generation consumes credits, with the exact number depending on the model, resolution, and duration. You can use Runway through its web app or call the same models through the developer API using the Python or Node SDK.

What you can build with Runway

Product ad variations: Photograph a product once, then generate multiple stylistically distinct video clips of it in different settings and lighting. Gen-4.5’s consistency keeps the product looking identical across every variation, cutting the need for repeated shoots.

Pre-production animatics: A rough, animated visualization of a planned scene that a director can review before committing to full production. What used to take a small animation team days now takes one person a few hours.

Music video or short film concept: A visual narrative built entirely from text and image prompts, letting independent musicians and filmmakers produce professional-looking content without a production budget.

In-app video generation feature: A product feature, built on the Runway API, that lets your own users generate or edit video clips without leaving your application.

Automated social content pipeline: A workflow that generates vertical, subtitle-ready clips for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts at volume, using Turbo model variants to keep per-clip cost and generation time low.

VFX and environment extension: A visual effects shot or extended environment for a low-budget production, generated instead of built with traditional CGI, cutting both cost and turnaround time.

FAQ

Is Runway free to use? +

Runway offers a free plan with a one-time deposit of 125 credits that does not expire, enough to test text-to-video and image-to-video generation. Paid plans start at $12 a month billed annually for 625 monthly credits, scaling up through Pro and Max tiers for heavier, ongoing generation needs.

What is Runway Gen-4.5? +

Gen-4.5 is Runway's flagship video generation model, built to keep characters, locations, and objects consistent across multiple shots and camera angles. It currently ranks at the top of independent text-to-video benchmarks for visual fidelity and physics accuracy, and it powers both the web app and the developer API.

How does Runway compare to Kling, Pika, or Veo? +

Runway leads on shot-by-shot creative control and consistency, which suits advertising and narrative work. Kling and Pika are cheaper and iterate faster, making them better for quick tests or high-volume social content. Google Veo leads on native audio and top-end output quality. The right choice depends on whether control or cost matters more.
